Happy Nurses Week!

Nurses are at the heart of healthcare and that has never been more apparent than throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. During Nurses Week 2021, we have a special opportunity to recognize these special healthcare heroes.

Nurses Week is celebrated annually, May 6-12. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife to honor of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth and to advance nurses’ vital role in transforming health care around the world. HealthTrust Workforce Solutions stands in support of extending this recognition into 2021 to continue to shine a light on the valuable impact nurses have made throughout the pandemic and beyond.

The pandemic has challenged us all in many ways, yet nurses have continued to deliver steadfast patient care without skipping a beat. We are inspired by the new and innovative ways in which nurses have found to take care of their patients, their families and one another. Your compassion, commitment, determination and resilience have given us all a reason to hope for a better tomorrow.

On behalf of the team at HealthTrust Workforce Solutions, thank you for being a beacon of light to those who need you most. We appreciate you and remain committed to doing our part to help you be able to continue to make a life-saving difference for those in our communities.

Have a wonderful Nurses Week!

Refresher of Timekeeping Expectations

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Apr 22, 2021 11:03:32 AM

HealthTrust Workforce Solutions is excited to enhance the employment experience of every clinician and assist in providing exceptional care to patients across the country. At this time, we wanted to provide an update regarding our timekeeping expectations for clinicians.

Kronos Punches at HCA Healthcare Facilities:

If you are aware that a punch was missed or a correction needs to be made in Kronos, please notify the Time Editor at the facility (i.e. Nursing Office or Unit manager), so they may enter the corrections in real-time so it will not delay your pay. It is your responsibility to ensure your punches are reflected and accurate in Kronos.

Meal Breaks:

  • You are expected to take a 30-minute meal break during each shift.
  • The most common issues are short and missed meal breaks.
  • Punches out and back in must be at least 30-minutes in order for the meal break to register
  • Tip: Set a timer on your phone for 30–35 minutes to remind you to ensure a full 30-minute meal break
  •  Be sure to work out an assigned meal break time with a buddy or arrange with the charge nurse to ensure coverage & compliance.
  • Meal breaks must be taken within the first 8 hours of your 12-hour shift, but not before the first four hours of your shift.
  • In the event that you are unable to take a meal break, please notify the facility designee (Charge, Supervisor, Director) and document per facility guidelines.

Please Note: Failure to comply with the above performance expectations may result in disciplinary action leading up to termination.

Clinicians, we are thankful for your commitment and dedication to patient care!

As we continue to provide exceptional care to patients, we are thankful for your commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Through floating or transferring, we know that facilities can receive the necessary clinicians to help care for patients.

Certified Nurses Day 2021: Celebrating and Supporting Lifelong Learners

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Apr 7, 2021 2:00:35 PM

Certified Nurses Day occurs every March 19, celebrating the birthday of Dr. Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles, RN, EdD, FAAN, a visionary nursing leader and scholar.

Kenneth Wall, a nurse at HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake in Texas, recently achieved his Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification. (left to right) Donna Baptiste, Dr. Karanja, Kenneth Wall, Jennifer Gonzales, Laurie Roth, Yvette Greer.

Florence Nightingale once said, “Let us consider that we are never done as nurses…we must be learning all of our lives.” Like Florence, HCA Healthcare and HealthTrust Workforce Solutions recognize the unique and intrinsic worth of each individual by supporting lifelong learners. On National Certified Nurses Day, we celebrate HCA Healthcare nursing colleagues who have demonstrated advanced skill, knowledge and practice by earning a professional certification in complex nursing care specialties.

“The value of a specialty nursing certification is becoming more important as healthcare becomes increasingly complex and challenging,” said Steve Tarkington, vice president, HCA Healthcare Center for Clinical Advancement.

As a part of our organization’s robust clinical education offerings and support, HCA Healthcare provides qualifying nurses who wish to pursue a specialty certification the opportunity to take advantage of discounted rates, a voucher program and reimbursement upon successfully completing the certification exam.

In 2020, more than 3,753 HCA Healthcare-affiliated registered nurses expanded their professional expertise and advanced their professional skills through the voucher program to earn certification in specialty areas, including:

  • Emergency Services (BCEN)
  • Critical Care (AACN)
  • Surgical Services (CCI)
  • Medical-Surgical (ANCC)
  • Medical-Surgical (ONCB)

According to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the benefits of obtaining a nursing certification include:

  • demonstration that the nurse cares enough to be tested against rigorous standards, confirming their knowledge and skills in a specialty area;
  • creating an environment of professionalism, contributing to staff retention and patient safety;
  • serving as a role model for professional development, lifelong learning and dedication to excellence in patient care, and
  • a sense of pride, fulfillment and empowerment, as well as career advancement. (Research shows nurse leaders prefer hiring a nurse who is certified.)

Thank you to certified nurses across HCA Healthcare and HealthTrust Workforce Solutions for your extraordinary contributions to patient care and your commitment to advancing the nursing practice. Meet a few lifelong learners below…

Cori Morrison, oncology certified nurse at
HCA Healthcare’s Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada

“To effectively care for patients, I want to be as educated as possible in all of aspects of nursing and treatment,” said Cori Morrison, an oncology certified nurse at HCA Healthcare’s Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. “Being certified helps me achieve this and stay in-tune with the ever changing facets of the oncology world.”

Callie Ballenger MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, NPD-BC, division nurse residency coordinator,
HCA Healthcare’s MidAmerica Division

Callie Ballenger, division nurse residency coordinator for HCA Healthcare’s MidAmerica Division, has a background as a Nurse Practitioner and recently achieved her Nursing Professional Development Certification. “I believe in the importance of lifelong learning and always being the best that I can be. I learn a lot from studying for certification exams. I also think it shows the patients that you are caring for and people that you work with that you are dedicated to the profession,” said Callie.

Jenny Weir, double-certified clinical nurse coordinator at
HCA Healthcare’s Los Robles Health System in Thousand Oaks, California

“I love to learn, and our field is ever changing,” says double-certified clinical nurse coordinator Jenny Weir of HCA Healthcare’s Los Robles Health System in Thousand Oaks, California. “I’ve been a labor and delivery nurse for more than 30 years and got certified shortly after in inpatient obstetrics. About two years ago, I achieved certification in electronic fetal monitoring. I wanted to show my peers, doctors and patients my specialized experience and that I meet a national standard of excellence. You can always sharpen your skills and be a resource to others.”

HCA Healthcare Named a 2021 World's Most Ethical Company

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Feb 23, 2021 2:03:05 PM

Infosys_ethical_company_wQVN4el_202102HealthTrust Workforce Solutions is proud to share that our parent company, HCA Healthcare was recognized for the 11th time by Ethisphere, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as one of the 2021 World’s Most Ethical CompaniesHCA Healthcare is one of only seven honorees in the Healthcare Providers category.

“We are honored to again be recognized as a World’s Most Ethical Company and owe it all to our incredible colleagues, especially those working on the front lines,” said Sam Hazen, chief executive officer of HCA Healthcare. “This acknowledgement underscores that, even when faced with a threat to public health and safety like that of a pandemic, we are committed to doing what’s right for our people, our patients, our communities and other stakeholders.”

The COVID-19 pandemic was at the forefront of 2020 and HCA Healthcare responded by protecting its colleagues and patients, and by partnering with others to improve care beyond the organization. HCA Healthcare has not laid-off a single employee due to the pandemic, and in April, it instituted a pandemic pay program, which allowed the organization to continue to pay more than 127,000 colleagues, even when their hours were affected by the significant decrease in patients visiting hospitals across the country. Additionally, HCA Healthcare hospitals do not bill patients who are diagnosed with COVID-19, whether they have insurance or not, for testing or hospital care related to the treatment of COVID-19.

As a learning health system, HCA Healthcare analyzes data from its approximately 35 million patient encounters each year to develop best practices that improve patient care. To help combat COVID-19, the health system teamed up with Google and SADA on a data portal to help communities prepare and respond to COVID-19, offered more than $1 million to local community partners to aid in coronavirus relief efforts and participated in the White House collaborative to provide up to 1,000 ventilators to other health systems.

“The world has faced tremendous obstacles this past year, but we are proud to be recognized for the positive impact we are having in the communities that we serve,” said Kathi Whalen, senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer at HCA Healthcare. “During these challenging times, our colleagues have shown an unwavering commitment to doing what is right.”

In 2020, HCA Healthcare donated more than $45 million to community organizations and provided charity care, uninsured discounts and other uncompensated care at a cost of $3.4 billion. Last year, HCA Healthcare colleagues spent more than 83,000 hours volunteering in the communities they serve. As part of its sustainability plan, HCA Healthcare seeks to protect and preserve the environment inside and outside of its facilities by encouraging the reduction of energy usage throughout its facilities and considering the environment in all new construction and renovation projects. In 2020, HCA Healthcare hospitals across the country were honored with 60 national Practice Greenhealth awards for their steadfast sustainability efforts.

Recognition by Ethisphere is in part affirmation of HCA Healthcare’s commitment to fostering a culture of diversity and belief that excellence in healthcare starts with a foundation of inclusion, compassion and respect. HCA Healthcare continues to deliver on this promise exemplified in recent diversity and inclusion efforts, including its award-winning BRAVE Conversations program, which provides colleagues an opportunity to discuss complex topics in a safe and respectful setting.

HCA Healthcare also announced a $10 million investment over the next three years in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Additionally, in response to a heightened focus on racial injustice, HCA Healthcare instituted a provisional social justice match, which supported gifts from colleagues to organizations and nonprofits supporting racial justice and addressing health equity for communities of color. In total, HCA Healthcare and its colleagues helped make an impact of $227,364 across 21 total organizations from June 5 to July 31, 2020.

“While addressing the tough challenges of 2020, HCA Healthcare led through resilience and a commitment to ethics and integrity,” said Ethisphere CEO, Timothy Erblich. “The World’s Most Ethical Companies honorees continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the highest values and positively impacting the communities they serve. Congratulations to everyone at HCA Healthcare for earning the World’s Most Ethical Companies designation.”

In 2021, Ethisphere recognized 135 honorees spanning 22 countries and 47 industries. The full list of the 2021 World's Most Ethical Companies can be found at https://worldsmostethicalcompanies.com/honorees.

Donating A Gift From The Heart

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Feb 18, 2021 3:22:39 PM

Donating BloodThe gift of blood saves lives, and there is an increased need for blood during the pandemic since blood and platelets cannot be manufactured – they can only come from volunteer donors. Below, meet a couple of HCA Healthcare colleagues who’ve donated blood to help patients and their communities. If you have already donated blood or plasma, log your donation as volunteer service on our giving and serving platform.

After recovering from a mild case of coronavirus, Dr. Fauston Devecchi (pictured left), a physician advisor at HCA Healthcare’s West Florida Hospital, knew he wanted to help others fighting the virus. He donated
his plasma at a convalescent plasma drive organized by his hospital.

“Donating convalescent plasma is a simple way to contribute to the well-being of our communities, our neighbors, our families; and a very easy one to pursue,” says Dr. Devecchi (read more about Dr. Devecchi’s experience).

Katie Grams McGovern used to be afraid of needles, but when she became the blood bank supervisor at Lakeview Regional Medical Center 10 years ago, she refused to ask others to give blood and not give herself.

Over the past decade, she’s given nearly 5 gallons of blood and partnered to host 42 blood drives. “Our drives have nearly doubled in participation, and I know that I’m not completely to credit for that, but I do tell people that if they need me to talk them through it, I will — I’ll even hold their hand,” says Katie. “Giving blood is a beautiful and simple thing and a great way to make a direct impact on patients' lives.”

HCA Healthcare Invests in Domestic Production of PPE

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Jan 22, 2021 11:03:06 AM

We are proud to share that HCA Healthcare, our parent company, has entered into a new joint venture business with A Plus International Inc. (A Plus), a global manufacturer of healthcare products, to expand access to personal protective equipment (PPE) by manufacturing surgical and procedure masks in the United States. Under the partnership, production of Level 1 and Level 3 masks meeting American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for quality and safety is expected to begin in early 2021 from a manufacturing center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Investment in the new business entity will initially be funded equally by HCA Healthcare Mission Fund, LLC, an affiliate of HCA Healthcare, and A Plus. The new business entity is part of HCA Healthcare’s continued effort to support healthcare workers and address the global demand for PPE. HCA Healthcare’s 2020 spending for PPE increased by more than $196 million from 2019.

“The recent surge in demand for PPE due to the pandemic has underscored how dependent we have been on supplies from overseas and the importance of working to diversify our supply chain,” said Dr. Jonathan Perlin, president, clinical operations group, and chief medical officer of HCA Healthcare. “We are thrilled to join forces with the expertise of A Plus on this new business which is focused on domestic manufacturing of PPE so that we can continue to support our caregivers on the front line.”

HCA Healthcare’s investment in the business is being funded through the HCA Healthcare Mission Fund, an innovation fund created following HCA Healthcare’s purchase of Mission Health to support healthcare-related businesses in Western North Carolina. The new business’ headquarters and production facility will be located on one of Mission Health’s campuses in Asheville and will bring skilled jobs to the area.

“Asheville has a diverse and skilled workforce with the experience to produce these important protective supplies that keep caregivers safe,” said Greg Lowe, president of HCA Healthcare’s North Carolina Division. “Thanks to the HCA Healthcare Mission Fund, we are honored to welcome this new business to our campus, and we are excited for the job opportunities for our community.”

Supporting the supply chain of hospitals and non-acute providers, HealthTrust, a global leader in purchasing aggregation and performance improvement for healthcare, will co-manage the joint venture with A Plus. HealthTrust’s wholly owned subsidiary, Resource Optimization & Innovation (ROi), will serve as the distribution partner for the business, providing access to PPE inventories to HealthTrust member organizations throughout the U.S.
