Insulin Scanning

Posted by HWS Clinical Ops on Feb 15, 2019 1:28:28 PM

Insulin is billable in increments of 20 units. This includes rapid acting insulin (HumaLOG, Lispro, etc.) in addition to insulin regular, insulin NPH, and insulin glargine (Lantus).

For example:

If the patient dose is 1 to 20 units of any insulin administered subcutaneouly, only one barcode scan is required, then backspace "20" and enter the number of units to be administered.

If the patient dose is 46 units of any insulin administered subcutaneously, three barcode scans are required, then backspace "60" and enter "46".

BCMA Scanning Compliance

Posted by HWS Clinical Ops on Jan 16, 2019 7:29:41 PM

As a friendly reminder BCMA scanning expectation is 99%. To ensure you are meeting this expectation, please print your scan rate at the completion of each shift and review with the charge nurse or designated facility contact. I have included printing instructions for review and reference; keep in mind Meditech menus can vary by Division and Facility.

Please comment with additional questions.

Thank you for your attention to this educational opportunity and your continued dedication to patient safety.

Welcome to 2019! I wanted to share a very helpful educational reference received from the Far-West Division. The education reviews scanning multiple doses of controlled substances and ensuring the second dose is properly scanned. If missed the verification, administration, and documentation are effected. Please comment below with questions. Thank you each for your dedication to patient safety.

Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis

Posted by HWS Clinical Ops on Dec 17, 2018 3:41:48 PM

All patients receive VTE prophylaxis: mechanical or pharmacological within the first 24 hours of admission unless contraindicated. Please make sure your documentation accurately reflects the requirement or contraindication. Should VTE prophylaxis or contraindication not be included in the admission orders, please speak with the physician. I have attached an educational reminder for review and reference.

Order Source: Z and W

Posted by HWS Clinical Ops on Dec 11, 2018 5:36:39 PM

The "z" and "w" order source in Meditech should never be used when entering an order. When either one of those sources is used, the order never goes to the physician to be electronically signed. This is particularly important for any Meditech controlled substance activity. Please comment below with questions.
