Certified Nurses Day 2021: Celebrating and Supporting Lifelong Learners

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Apr 7, 2021 2:00:35 PM

Certified Nurses Day occurs every March 19, celebrating the birthday of Dr. Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles, RN, EdD, FAAN, a visionary nursing leader and scholar.

Florence Nightingale once said, “Let us consider that we are never done as nurses…we must be learning all of our lives.” Like Florence, HCA Healthcare and HealthTrust Workforce Solutions recognize the unique and intrinsic worth of each individual by supporting lifelong learners. On National Certified Nurses Day, we celebrate HCA Healthcare nursing colleagues who have demonstrated advanced skill, knowledge and practice by earning a professional certification in complex nursing care specialties.

“The value of a specialty nursing certification is becoming more important as healthcare becomes increasingly complex and challenging,” said Steve Tarkington, vice president, HCA Healthcare Center for Clinical Advancement.

As a part of our organization’s robust clinical education offerings and support, HCA Healthcare provides qualifying nurses who wish to pursue a specialty certification the opportunity to take advantage of discounted rates, a voucher program and reimbursement upon successfully completing the certification exam.

In 2020, more than 3,753 HCA Healthcare-affiliated registered nurses expanded their professional expertise and advanced their professional skills through the voucher program to earn certification in specialty areas, including:

  • Emergency Services (BCEN)
  • Critical Care (AACN)
  • Surgical Services (CCI)
  • Medical-Surgical (ANCC)
  • Medical-Surgical (ONCB)

According to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the benefits of obtaining a nursing certification include:

  • demonstration that the nurse cares enough to be tested against rigorous standards, confirming their knowledge and skills in a specialty area;
  • creating an environment of professionalism, contributing to staff retention and patient safety;
  • serving as a role model for professional development, lifelong learning and dedication to excellence in patient care, and
  • a sense of pride, fulfillment and empowerment, as well as career advancement. (Research shows nurse leaders prefer hiring a nurse who is certified.)

Thank you to certified nurses across HCA Healthcare and HealthTrust Workforce Solutions for your extraordinary contributions to patient care and your commitment to advancing the nursing practice. Meet a few lifelong learners below…

Callie Ballenger, division nurse residency coordinator for HCA Healthcare’s MidAmerica Division, has a background as a Nurse Practitioner and recently achieved her Nursing Professional Development Certification. “I believe in the importance of lifelong learning and always being the best that I can be. I learn a lot from studying for certification exams. I also think it shows the patients that you are caring for and people that you work with that you are dedicated to the profession,” said Callie.

Jenny Weir, double-certified clinical nurse coordinator at
HCA Healthcare’s Los Robles Health System in Thousand Oaks, California

“I love to learn, and our field is ever changing,” says double-certified clinical nurse coordinator Jenny Weir of HCA Healthcare’s Los Robles Health System in Thousand Oaks, California. “I’ve been a labor and delivery nurse for more than 30 years and got certified shortly after in inpatient obstetrics. About two years ago, I achieved certification in electronic fetal monitoring. I wanted to show my peers, doctors and patients my specialized experience and that I meet a national standard of excellence. You can always sharpen your skills and be a resource to others.”

HCA Healthcare Invests in Domestic Production of PPE

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Jan 22, 2021 11:03:06 AM

We are proud to share that HCA Healthcare, our parent company, has entered into a new joint venture business with A Plus International Inc. (A Plus), a global manufacturer of healthcare products, to expand access to personal protective equipment (PPE) by manufacturing surgical and procedure masks in the United States. Under the partnership, production of Level 1 and Level 3 masks meeting American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for quality and safety is expected to begin in early 2021 from a manufacturing center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Investment in the new business entity will initially be funded equally by HCA Healthcare Mission Fund, LLC, an affiliate of HCA Healthcare, and A Plus. The new business entity is part of HCA Healthcare’s continued effort to support healthcare workers and address the global demand for PPE. HCA Healthcare’s 2020 spending for PPE increased by more than $196 million from 2019.

“The recent surge in demand for PPE due to the pandemic has underscored how dependent we have been on supplies from overseas and the importance of working to diversify our supply chain,” said Dr. Jonathan Perlin, president, clinical operations group, and chief medical officer of HCA Healthcare. “We are thrilled to join forces with the expertise of A Plus on this new business which is focused on domestic manufacturing of PPE so that we can continue to support our caregivers on the front line.”

HCA Healthcare’s investment in the business is being funded through the HCA Healthcare Mission Fund, an innovation fund created following HCA Healthcare’s purchase of Mission Health to support healthcare-related businesses in Western North Carolina. The new business’ headquarters and production facility will be located on one of Mission Health’s campuses in Asheville and will bring skilled jobs to the area.

“Asheville has a diverse and skilled workforce with the experience to produce these important protective supplies that keep caregivers safe,” said Greg Lowe, president of HCA Healthcare’s North Carolina Division. “Thanks to the HCA Healthcare Mission Fund, we are honored to welcome this new business to our campus, and we are excited for the job opportunities for our community.”

Supporting the supply chain of hospitals and non-acute providers, HealthTrust, a global leader in purchasing aggregation and performance improvement for healthcare, will co-manage the joint venture with A Plus. HealthTrust’s wholly owned subsidiary, Resource Optimization & Innovation (ROi), will serve as the distribution partner for the business, providing access to PPE inventories to HealthTrust member organizations throughout the U.S.

daisy-award-logo.jpg

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. Presented by the DAISY Foundation, the DAISY Award celebrates and rewards nurses for the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care that they demonstrate daily.

Currently, the DAISY Foundation is running a public campaign where people are encouraged to share their appreciation for the diligent work of extraordinary nurses. Through your nominations for the DAISY Award, nurses who have made an exceptional impact in your life and in the lives of your families and friends can have the potential opportunity to be recognized and acknowledged.

The campaign, which kicked off with virtual signs in Manhattan's Times Square, will continue to be shared throughout the country. The DAISY Foundation's ultimate goal is to show the public's gratitude for the diligent work of nurses and to help reduce the burnout that many nurses continue to feel, especially during the fight against COVID-19.

We are standing alongside the DAISY Foundation and are asking for our community to make nominations, sharing how a nurse has made a meaningful impact on a patient or on a patient’s family. DAISY Award honorees receive a certificate of recognition, a DAISY Award pin, and a Healer’s Touch stone sculpture.

Thousands of Top U.S. Hospitals Encourage Everyone to #MaskUp

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Dec 4, 2020 2:27:18 PM

Mask UpGrowing numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths are troubling; facemasks can slow the trend

100 of the nation’s top health care systems, representing thousands of hospitals in communities across the U.S., have come together with an urgent plea for all Americans – mask up, because wearing a facemask is our best chance at slowing the surging COVID-19 pandemic now.

More than 11.5 million Americans have tested positive for the virus – including an additional one million in just the past week – leading to nearly 250,000 deaths.

The current trends are daunting and frightening. If the nation stays on its current course, hospital leaders are increasingly concerned that more healthcare facilities will be overwhelmed as shortages of healthy caregivers make it difficult to handle a rapidly increasing number of patients. Unfortunately, this is already happening in parts of our country.

The next several months will be critical. Though there has been positive news about vaccine development, no one knows when those vaccines will be ready for widespread use. In the meantime, everyone must remain vigilant, take precautions and follow public health orders.

The country has reached a tipping point. The power to do what is right is now in the hands of everyone everywhere.

Currently, a public service message is running in The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times. Additionally, hospitals and health systems across the country are uniting to share these messages regionally.

The message reads:

HWS Honored with American Staffing Association ELEVATE Award for Second Time

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Oct 2, 2020 12:31:06 PM

Elevate Awards

This professional recognition program celebrates the most innovative and effective learning programs to train, upskill, and reskill temporary and contract employees across the U.S. Awards and honorable mention distinctions are conferred in award classes by company revenue.

We are pleased to announce that our StaRN and StarTECH programs were honored with a 2020 American Staffing Association ELEVATE Award. This national awards program recognizes the most innovative and effective work-based learning programs to train, upskill, and reskill temporary and contract employees.

Since 2014, the HealthTrust Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses has trained 20,000-plus newly graduated nurses who otherwise would have faced substantial difficulties working in acute care environments.  The program bridges the skills gap and prepares the new nurse to care for patients as soon as they enter the facility. In recent years, the program has expanded to include StaRN PLUS and StarTECH. StaRN Plus provides intensive specialty training to experienced licensed nurses and combines classroom instruction, eLearning, simulation experiences, and hands‐on clinical training at sponsoring HealthTrust client facilities. Depending on the specialty track, the program runs for 10–22 weeks and the nurses are paid during the term. StarTech is a three-week, client-paid program for certified nurse assistants that combines classroom instruction, electronic health record practice, and hands‐on clinical training in acute hospital settings. To date, approximately 1,000 CNAs have participated in StarTech.

A Letter of Gratitude For Exceptional Care

Posted by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions on Sep 30, 2020 4:08:33 PM

Here is a personal story from one of our own HWS team members. Read as he shares his experience being the recipient of care at an HCA Healthcare facility where we truly care like family.

"I am writing this as a gesture of gratitude toward some truly exceptional people.  I am 4 weeks past the most challenging, life-changing experience of my life.

In early August I had a CT scan due to some lingering abdominal pain, I feared it could be a hernia. On Monday, August 10th I got a call from my primary care physician’s office that shocked me.  I am a relatively young and healthy person and what comes next I could not have imagined.

The CT scan discovered a very large mass on my right kidney and I was advised to see my urologist immediately. My urologist at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center rushed me in to an appointment the next day. The prognosis sounded bleak to me, but my urologist was excellent providing guidance. Most likely I had advanced kidney cancer, with the tumor consuming my entire right kidney.  The tumor was roughly double the size of my left kidney and much larger than a typical tumor with this type of cancer.

The week that followed was a battery of tests at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s Surgical Hospital. On Wednesday, August 19th, I had a radical nephrectomy to remove my right kidney and the 16cm tumor that had completely consumed it. After a few days that felt like an eternity, my Urologist called me with the pathology results. The tumor was stage 4 clear cell renal carcinoma and in my urologist’s review of the pathology report, his opinion was that the surgery was curative.

By the grace of God and the amazing people at St. David’s I am alive, and hope to live a long healthy life. I was terrified through all of it, but the care and compassion I got from everyone at both St. David’s facilities was truly incredible. When I say everyone, I mean EVERY SINGLE PERSON – the schedulers who understood my urgency and worked to get each of my tests and my surgery lined up as quickly as possible, the smiling screeners at the entrances who greeted me quite a few times over the span of 2 weeks, the nurses who healed, comforted, and reassured me, and of course the urologist who I cannot adequately thank.

Hospital Picture(Brad Andress - Division Vice President, Central and West Texas)

I also could not have asked for a better leadership team at HealthTrust, they were beyond supportive and accommodating to my testing and surgery schedule on short notice. More importantly, they truly cared and it was obvious with every conversation, every thought and prayer for good health that I received.

I have been employed by HCA (through HealthTrust) for a little over a year and it has been a great personal and professional experience for me, to say the least. When I have the chance to speak with other HCA employees I always like to hear their stories.  During pre-op I asked the nurse who was starting my IV how she got to St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. She told me that after 35 years at another local hospital she returned to St. David’s. When I asked why she told me “They just care more here”. I couldn’t agree more.

I have never been more excited, more passionate, or more motivated, to put all my effort into a company and their mission.

At HCA Healthcare, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life

I’m alive and healthy because that’s true and our teams live our mission. Thank you to everyone who I came into contact with at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s Surgical Hospital, including those who I spoke with but never met. Through the most challenging time of my life you made a difference and I will be eternally grateful."
